Weller Repairs and Service

Weller Soldering irons are excellent. They heat up quickly, can solder large components are reliable and run for years without needing a service. When they do fail, they can be easily fixed but they do require time and care to fix. They are the bext solder iron for using on through hole and large component soldering.

*** WARNING ** ONLY QUALIFIED ELECTRICIANS SHOULD REPAIR WELLER SOLDERING IRONS ***

There are many ways these soldering irons fail, and these include: loose internal screws, blown fuses, damaged strain relief, mains cable damaged by soldering iron, broken connectors, blown heater, broken wires, faulty tips. Many technicians find repairing these very difficult but the information below should help.

Steps to repair:

Base station

  1. Check mains cables visually for any signs of damage. Replace if necessary
  2. Remove feet from under base station and unscrew the four philips screws
  3. Check strain relief for the mains cable and repair if needed
  4. Tighten th etransformer screws, check cabling
  5. Check the switch and fuse
  6. Check the ground connection to pin 2 of solder iron cable
  7. Power on and measure output voltage using Fluke meter - >27-27.5V AC typically

Solder iron:

  1. Check the ground connection from pin 2 on connector to one of 3 screws near tip
  2. Check the heater resistance from pins 1 & 3 on connector - typically 13-15 ohms
  3. If items 1 & 2 pass, soldering iron is good. Otherwise, replace the heater element
  4. Remove 4 screws, push out wires, cut heater element and replace
  5. Insert the tip and check, magnetic switch operatures on yellow block
